   Grand Tetons and Yellowstone...

Pictures from our Jackson Hole, Wyoming vacation where we visited Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

We stayed at the Teton Mountain Lodge at the base of the Jackson Hole resort located just a mile away from the south entrance to Grand Teton National Park. Although we did not get a chance to do any serious back country exploring in either park we did get to see our share of wildlife including deer, antelope, moose, bison, beavers, bald eagles and even a glimpse of a grizzly bear.

Day 1 - After enjoying the previous afternoon at the resort, we began our Grand Teton National Park exploration with a morning hike to Phelps Lake and a visit to the Rockefeller Preserve. Later we explored the popular Jenny Lake where the boys enjoyed a brief swim. Finally, we drove into the town of Jackson for dinner and shopping where we took in a street gun fight performance.

Day 2 - We spent more time in Grand Teton National Park venturing to Jackson Lake where we went on a boat tour of the lake and the surrounding natural features. In the late afternoon we explored a series of beaver ponds on the East side of the park before returning to the resort where boys took part in their nightly swim. The next morning on the way to Yellowstone we encountered a female moose and her calf grazing in a wetland marsh.

Day 3 - On this day we got an early start and drove several hours to Yellowstone National Park where we would spend the entire day before returning to Jackson Hole late at night. One day is nowhere near enough time to thoroughly explore Yellowstone, but we were able to see most of the more popular and iconic sights. This included Geyser Basin, of course, where Old Faithful is located among other geysers. We also visited the very large Yellowstone Lake, the Hayden Valley, the Sulphur Cauldrons and Yellowstone Canyon featuring Yellowstone Falls made famous by Ansel Adams. We saw plenty of deer, antelope and bison herds and we just missed seeing wolves in the Hayden valley, and alas we struck out on any bear sightings, but not for lack of trying.

Day 4 - We returned to Grand Teton National Park this day for a bike ride to the Jenny Lake area. On this day we saw our first bull moose lounging in the river. In the evening, we floated down the Snake River where we saw many beavers and bald eagles. Near the end we got a glimpse (thanks to Brendan's spotting) of a Grizzly bear in the distance just before he moved behind a tree stand.
